In 1989, I was a handsome college freshman, trying to make my way on the campus of Indiana State University, in Terry Haute Indiana. My days were filled with revealing in my new found freedom, class and girls. All was well until the fall of 1989 when Iben Browning, a climatologist announced a major earthquake would strike somewhere along the New Madrid fault line one December 3, 1990.
Over the next year, media coverage of the impending disaster filled the air waves. Phrases such as “be prepared not scared” were common place. During this period, I thought what would I do so far from home if a major earthquake struck. I considered the bridges across the Wabash would be knocked out, closing off my chances to head to family in the west.
I pulled out maps(for you youngin’s there were no apps just paper maps)of the area and planned a way home. This was my first taste of prepping. I remembered my Boy Scout skills including how to read a compass and hiking skills. With a route home planned, I then planned on what to carry including food and water. I planned on what to do if I was stuck on campus.
My dorm closet was full of what at the time I considered to be adequate stocks of food and water. December 3rd came and went. Nothing! Was I upset I planned for the Big One? No thanks to my planning, I had what I believe was a way to make it home. I had peace of mind. Peace of mind that my roommate and friends didn’t have while we nervously waited it out with a bottle as we hosted an earthquake party.
Over the next year or so, those “rations” did came in handy as my money ran low while working on my degree.
